Four Tips for Choosing Classy Outfits for Your Engagement Session
Picking out what to wear for your Engagement Session can be stressful. Here’s a compilation of everything I’ve learned photography-wise, condensed into four questions to ask yourself. These will help filter down your options to that perfect, classy choice!
Is This Outfit Too Noisy?
Loud colors and patterned clothes tend to distract from the main subject of your photos. The first thing we want to pop out in your pictures is your relationship and how you two interact together. Try to aim for light, pastel, and earthy tones; preferably solid colors, but minimal patterns are fine too (see images above for examples of clothes with minimal patterns).
Now, I’m not saying you should drown out your personality completely. If everything you own is neon and floral, then you show up in those neon florals, girl.
Am I Comfortable in This Outfit?
Dressing comfortably for your Engagement Session is important. But by comfortable, I don’t mean you should show up in sweatpants, a baggy t-shirt, and sneakers. No, I mean, “do you feel confident?” For example, if you’re not a dress kind of girl, don’t force yourself to wear one for this. You can still look classy without putting on a dress. Getting in front of a camera can be intimidating and wearing something that you are comfortable in makes all the difference.
Does This Outfit Compliment My Partner’s?
Remember your early 2000s family pictures where everyone’s wearing white t-shirts and khakis? We’ve all been there and we’re definitely not trying to recreate that (sorry mom). It’s important to have outfits that compliment each other, but don’t go as far as to match. However, If you’re planning on wearing a white sundress, don’t be afraid to pick out a bowtie of the same color for your honey. If you know your fella is gonna pick out his favorite pair of brown chinos to wear, grab your brown shawl to compliment it.
Is This Outfit Too Trendy?
This one might sting a little, sorry. If the clothes you picked out to wear are trendy right now, you might want to rethink your outfit. Imagine if you looked back on your engagement photos from ten years ago and you had worn crocs. You would most likely regret that decision, right? We all might have thought it looked cool in the moment, but these pictures will be around for awhile. Try to stick to clothing that is classic, timeless, and probably won’t go out of style in the next 5 years.
